Ireland to ban vape advertising targeting minor – Vape China

Ireland to ban vape advertising targeting minor - Vape China

Irish Health Minister Stephen Donnelly this week launched a new regulation. He announced that will ban vape advertising in places where children are present. The regulation will take effect from September this year.

Vapes and vape advertising in places where children appear will be banned.

This regulation is part of the Public Health (Tobacco Products and Nicotine Inhaling Products) Act 2023. The new regulation will ban vapes and vape advertising in places where children appear. For example, children’s cinemas, public transport infrastructure, and within 200 meters of schools. Besides, it also outright bans the sale of tobacco products and nicotine products such as vapes targeted at children.

The bill was introduced by Ireland’s Health Minister Donnelly last Thursday (March 28). Their department was celebrating the 20th anniversary of the smoking ban. The minister says he is interested in raising the smoking age to 21. And he is considering a total ban on vaping products.

Recently, members of the minister’s Fianna Fail party and the party’s MEPs Billy Kelleher and Barry Andrews are also calling for a ban on all vaping devices. However, the new legislative process is very complex and requires a public consultation. This may affect the EU single market. But Donnelly seems unfazed by these obstacles.

Donnelly says further legislation is now being developed to target in-store vape marketing. He adds that: “We’re looking at flavorings, we’re looking at packaging as well.”

Tánaiste Micheál Martin and junior public health minister Hildegarde Naughton all support this regulation.

Comment from the vape manufacturer’s point.

From a vape manufacturer’s perspective, the ban is a measure to protect minors. And, this can promote responsible marketing practices. It aligns with the industry’s commitment to preventing youth access and exposure to vaping products. Vape manufacturers should support this regulation. They need to ensure that their advertising strategies comply with the new guidelines.

Besides, the new regulation underscores the importance of targeting adult consumers while prioritizing the well-being and safety of children. By adhering to these regulations, vape manufacturers can contribute to a responsible and sustainable vaping industry in Ireland.
