Northern Ireland MPs Back Proposal to Ban Disposable E-cigarettes

According to report, Derry and Strabane Council in Northern Ireland will write to the Secretary of State to request a ban on disposable e-cigarette products.

Councilor Caitlin Deeny presentes the proposal of banning disposable e cigarettes at a general meeting on Oct. 25.

The city councilor said disposable vaping devices have had a negative impact on society’s environment. She points out that disposable e-cigarettes are made of a variety of materials, including plastic casings, copper and lithium batteries, etc. These materials are not effectively recycling. In fact, a large number of disposable electronic cigarettes are discarding in landfills every day. This not only increases fire risks and air and water pollution, but also intensifies greenhouse gas emissions.

Councilors not totally agree with this proposal.

Councilor Martin Reilly proposes an amendment, arguing that a complete ban on disposable e-cigarettes could be counterproductive. Because it would still be possible to circumvent the ban by offering rechargeable vapes. However, Caitlin Dinney did not accept the revised suggestions due to feedback from all parties.

In the end, the city councilors passes the original motion successfully by with 27 votes in favor and 6 abstentions.

Vape industrial practitioners are opposed to this.

Stephen Ryan, general manager of vape company VaporLinQ, says the decision is too extreme. He calls on the government to make more changes to existing regulations to provide safer and healthier vaporizer products while preventing the market circulation of illegal disposable e-cigarette products.

Moreover, Frankie Zhou, General Manager of vape manufacturer VPFIT, also think this complete ban is too strict. He says that,

“Currently, the reason why many countries ban disposable vapes is basically because of the environmental concern, and youth using concern. Nowadays, more and more e-cigarette manufacturers and vape brands are working on vaporizer recycling solutions. Moreover, some vape companies are stop using bright packing so as to less attractive to the youth. The government should notice that we, the vape industrial practitioners, are working on to make this market more health.”
