After the Australian government decided to ban disposable vape, neighboring New Zealand did not intend to imitate the Australian disposable vape ban.
New Zealand will not prohibit all entertainment uses vape products. Because with the strengthening of tobacco regulations, these disposable vape products need to be “available at any time.”
However, Christopher Luxon, leader of New Zealand National Party, said he was willing to try “all possibilities”, including vape ban. He said that New Zealand’s current policies for vape products were “wrong“.
Luxon’s point of view comes from investigation statistics. According to the Action on Smoking and Health (ASH), the vape products using percentage of New Zealand 10th grade students is even higher than adults.
In 2022, 10.1% of 10th grade students used vape pen products every day, increased 0.5% from 9.6% in 2021. More seriously, this percentage increased tripled since 2019.
At the same time, the number of 10th grade students who smoke every day continues to decline, from 4.2% in 2021 to 3% in 2022.
Statistics show that the use of vape pen products has deteriorated. However, Ayesha Verrall, the head of New Zealand Health Minister, believes that vape pen are important tools for people to abstain from smoking, especially for those who have just start to quit smoking.
She saw the problem of vape products of minors, but she said that it needs to be balanced. While helping smokers to quit smoking, it is necessary to ensure that young people do not use vape product.
“We haven’t found a balance point yet.”
She said that the government has been discussing with various proposals. These proposals include the settings of vape taste, vape brand, disposable vape and sales points near the school. But these results need time to legislate, and this year no longer has time to realize this.
Finally, she emphasized that “vape pen products do play an important role in helping people quit smoking. New Zealand will make people buy tobacco harder.”
